When we feel uneasy, itās usually because weāre totally lost in the endless narrative and mind chatter that constantly goes on in our heads. And although most of it is all crap, we seem to always get hooked. Like a fish that just canāt help itself!
Weāll be following some thought down a rabbit hole that has to do with the regret or shame of the past, or the worry about the future, and itās always filled with anxiety.
Thereās only one place thatās calm and peaceful, and thatās when we get to connect to the present moment and our deeper self. āConnect to the presentā, does not mean physically being in the present, but mentally being anyplace but the present.
We can use these 17 sayings daily to focus your consciousness on the peaceful present and connect your soul to a deeper sense of being. It will interrupt your mind chatter, calm your nervous system, reduces anxiety, and have a relaxing effect.
The Tradition of Mantra Recitation
In the Hindu tradition, the recitation of a mantra, or sacred words and sayings, is known as japa, and is thousands of years old. Itās said to be a means of self-transformation, and a way to connect with a deeper way of being.
These popular Hindu mantras are in Sanskrit (an ancient Indo-European language of India), but mantra has deep roots in every major spiritual tradition. For example, Christians repeat the name Jesus, while Catholics commonly repeat the Hail Mary, many Jews recite Barukh atah Adonai (āBlessed art thou, oh Lordā), while Muslims repeat the name Allah, and the Indian people repeat Ram, for the name of God.
The Science Behind the Practice of Mantras
Neuroscientists have quantified the health benefits of this ancient practice, such as its ability to help free your mind of background chatter and calm your nervous system.
Dr. Herbert Benson is the founder of the Mind Body Medical Institute at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, and professor of mind body medicine at Harvard Medical School. He wrote the best-selling book, among many others, titled, āThe Relaxation Responseā. Dr. Benson has experimented with patients repeating mantras as well as nonreligious words, such as āone.ā Heās found that regardless of what the person repeats, the word or phrase has nearly the same effects: relaxation and the ability to better cope with lifeās unexpected stressors.
I donāt know about you, but sitting in a full lotus position, reciting Sanskrit words I donāt even know how to pronounce will not make me relaxed and peaceful. As a matter of fact, it will make me more anxious than when I started.
Thatās why I collected 17 SOPEs (or āSayings Of Practical Enlightenmentā) you can use anytime, anywhere to regain your center, come back to the present moment, shift your consciousness, move your attention, get calm, reduce your stress and anxiety, and connect to your higher self.
