Integrity has nothing to do with keeping your word, but everything to do with honoring your word!
It has nothing to do with the ethics of good or bad, right or wrong. Integrity just is. You either operate with it or without it.
Integrity has the essence of being whole and complete. And when you honor your word, you’re whole and complete! You’re in alignment.
We can honor our word in two different ways. We either do what we say we’re going to do, or if we can’t do what we say we’re going to do, we communicate that honestly to all people involved as soon as we know it…no reasons, no excuses after the fact. When we do this, we have honored our word even though we haven’t kept it.
If you don’t maintain integrity at those times that you can’t keep your word, then there will be times that your behavior will be out of integrity, which makes it impossible for others to trust you and work with you, because they will never know when they really can take you as your word, and count on you!
You will be considered by others to be unreliable and untrustworthy. Life becomes unworkable. And opportunities for growth diminish.
Also, one’s word to one’s self is a critical part of integrity. Self-discipline is based upon it, which is the core ingredient in reaching our goals. If you say, “I’m going to the gym at 8 a.m.”, and then you’re not, you undermine yourself as a person of integrity, and you’re not whole and complete as a person.
Nothing works without Integrity!
